Roland, affectionately known as “Jr”, was born on June 11th, 1944 in Lisbon to Roland Grondin, Sr and Florence Laroche. He was educated in the Lisbon school system and served in Vietnam as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army. After serving in the Army, Jr worked in the Paint Shop at Bath Iron Works for 38 years. Following his retirement from BIW, Jr thoroughly enjoyed being a volunteer at the Lisbon Community School for nearly 20 years. His almost daily trips to the school left a lasting impression on the teachers and students.
On February 5, 1972, Jr married the love of his life, Janice Smith. They spent 51 years together building a wonderful life filled with love, travel, family and many friends. Jr spent many hours happily puttering in his garage with loud Elvis music in the background, riding his tractor around the yard, and fixing anything (and everything!) around the house.
Jr was a big fan of Boston sports, watching or listening to as many Red Sox, Patriots and Bruins games possible. An avid bowler, Jr was inducted into the Lewiston-Auburn Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 1993 and into the State of Maine Ten Pin Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 2001. Along with friends Glenn Hill and Win Smith, Jr coached youth baseball teams in the Lisbon Junior Athletic League for several years.
A proud Veteran, Jr was a member of American Legion Post 158 and VFW Post 1603. He had the great pleasure of being selected to go on two Honor Flight trips to Washington D.C., going once with his daughters in 2019, and again in 2022 with his brother, David.
Jr was always willing to lend a helping hand, a wise crack or a wink whenever the need arose. He will be missed dearly by not only his family and close friends, but also the many special acquaintances he made wherever he went.
Jr leaves behind his loving wife, Janice; two daughters, Jackie Beebe and her partner Curt Plaisted, and Jen Labonte and her partner, Kristina Record; five grandchildren, Allie Beebe, Jacob Beebe, Lauren McDonough, Brittany Roldan-Grondin, and Michael Grondin; three siblings, sister Pauline and her husband Maurice Perrault, sister Carol and her husband Aaron Abbott, and brother David Katula; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Jr was predeceased by his parents; his daughter, Florence Grondin; his son, Brian Grondin; his grandson, Joseph Grondin; and his brother, Roger Grondin.
