Sylvia Ann Doughty, 90, a resident of Bowdoin, Maine, passed away on September 21, 2026. Born on September 24, 1935, in Norway, Maine, Sylvia attended local schools in Norway and Bryant Pond. From an early age, she carried a steady, heartfelt dream of becoming a mother—a calling she would later fulfill with deep devotion and care.
On May 9, 1954, Sylvia married the love of her life, Stanley A. Doughty. They shared a long and happy marriage until his passing in 2016, building a home rooted in kindness, commitment, and family. Together they raised five children: Rick, Ronald, Sue, Chip, and Mike. Sundays held a special place in Sylvia’s heart, as the family would visit her parents at their home in Bryant Pond—one of her favorite places and a setting for cherished time together.
Once her children were a bit older, Sylvia worked as a Pharmacy Technician at Robert's Pharmacy in Lisbon. Yet, in the measure of her own life, her greatest work was always the loving care she gave to her family—offered with a compassionate spirit and a willingness to help wherever she was needed.
Sylvia found joy in simple pleasures and lively pastimes. She loved going for rides in the car, and she enjoyed bowling, playing golf, and softball. An avid Cribbage player, she also took pride in baking—especially making homemade bread for her husband and date-filled cookies for her church friends. With an appreciation for excitement, she even enjoyed the thrill of stock car races. Halloween was her favorite holiday—“the scarier the better,” as she liked it.
A faithful presence at Lisbon United Methodist Church, Sylvia attended every Sunday and carried that same steadfast support into the lives of those she loved, never missing a sports game for her family. Fond of children and animals, she was attentive in the small, telling ways—always making sure to feed the birds and to brake for squirrels. In these everyday acts, her gentle helpfulness and devoted heart were unmistakable.
Sylvia was predeceased by her parents; her beloved husband, Stanley; and two brothers, Larry Whitman and Herbert Whitman and her sister in law Carol Whitman. She is survived by her children: Rick Doughty of Bowdoin; Ronald Doughty and wife Noreen of Brunswick; Sue Doughty of Bowdoin; Stanley “Chip” Doughty Jr. and wife Stephanie of Sabattus; and Mike Doughty and significant other Karen of Brunswick. She is also survived by her brother Donald Whitman and significant other Marcia of Buckfield. Sylvia also leaves behind 9 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, as well as nieces, nephews and a special sister-in-law, Patty Whitman Howe.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Winship Green Center for Health and Rehabilitation in Bath, as well as the team at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House for the wonderful care they gave to Sylvia. The family would also like to thank Amy Doughty for her devoted care to both Stanley and Sylvia.
