I am the hospice volunteer who visited Alyce with my therapy dog, Ava. I’ve been volunteering for 18 years & Alyce is a person I will never forget. Our visits would often be an hour as we told stories about our lives. We talked about books we liked, early life memories, our families, our children, our jobs and more. After my first visit, as I was leaving, she said she would see me next Thursday and I kept our Thursday visits. She had a great sense of humor. If I complimented her she would roll her eyes & tell me I was full of it. She definitely loved Ava and her hand spent a lot of time petting Ava. It was an honor to spend those hours with Alyce.

I was fortunate enough to become friends with my mother in law as well as family. Mom was always interested in our lives, appreciative of any small errand or task we did for her. Valued her independence and privacy and was a self- made woman. Always with a kind word or thought about her family which extended to partners, friends, cousins, nieces, nephews, prior in laws, everyone. Mom had a long- lived life which she did not understand. And as a nurse, Mom kept asking me why she was living so long and all I could tell her is she is important to us and we need her to stay with us. Of course, that answer was dismissed. But we loved and still love her. A piece of her is in her sons, their children and their children’s children so in a sense her life goes on. I am forever grateful for having been her friend, daughter in law, confidant and caregiver for these years. My life is better having been a part of hers.

Love always,
Debra
