Born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, Esther was the beloved wife of 29 years to the late Joseph A. Werner. She was the devoted daughter of the late Margaret and David Smith, and cherished sister of the late Muriel (Ray) Seiberlich and Ruth (Fred) Holgate.
A proud graduate of J.W. Hallahan Catholic Girls High School, Class of 1948, Esther began a long and fulfilling career with Sears Roebuck & Co., where she worked for over 40 years. She embraced every role with dedication and pride — especially her time as a timekeeper — and was among the company’s very first group of computer learners, a reflection of her curiosity and willingness to grow.
Esther found joy in so many of life’s simple pleasures. She was an excellent cook (her family joked she could rival the Barefoot Contessa), a passionate traveler who loved visiting Hawaii, Bermuda, and Cape May, NJ, and a talented gardener and seamstress. She enjoyed shopping trips, reading, dancing, and listening to her favorite music — especially Frank Sinatra.
Those who knew Esther will remember her for her unwavering love of cats and her strong and determined nature.
Esther’s memory will be forever treasured by her loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and her dear friends and community at Villa St. Benedict.
A funeral mass will be held on Monday, October 27, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Sacred Heart Monastery Chapel (located in the Benedale Center) 1920 Maple Ave. Lisle, IL 60532.
