Frieda Sattler was a remarkable woman; intelligent, loving, kind, hardworking, devoted to her late husband, Walter and her family. Her parents, Rose and John Fuerst were born in Austria and immigrated to Chicago. This is where Frieda was born and raised the third child in a family of five siblings. The children oldest to youngest were Albert, Rose, Frieda, Bertha and Walter.
Frieda was a sports lover and lived close to Fuller Park where she enjoyed swimming, volleyball, gymnastics, baseball and crafts. She was an avid reader and an excellent student. Her love of sports, reading and crossword puzzles continued into adulthood. She loved watching the Chicago Bears, Cubs and good tennis matches.
Frieda was raised in the Lutheran faith. She attended Englewood High School in Chicago and graduated while the country was still experiencing the depression. Jobs were hard to find during that period and until other opportunities presented themselves she was able to find employment as a mother’s helper and then with a pharmaceutical laboratory.
She met the love of her life, Walter Sattler, and they were married in 1936. They had three children, Rosemarie, Walter and Linda. She was a wonderful mother and added a love of cooking to her many other talents. She returned to the work force when her children were all in school and worked for Standard Brands Inc. for over 20 years.
The children married, Rosemarie to Wayne Wilson, Walter to Bonnie Kaiser and Linda to Roy Root. Frieda was blessed with six grandchildren: Wayne B., Brett, Michael Wilson and Lisa Wilson Scheumann, and Eric Sattler and Lauren Sattler Moser. The next generation of great grandchildren included Kristine Wilson Cantrell, Gregory Wilson, Alyssa and Jamie Wilson, Jacqueline, Melanie and Nicole Wilson, Suzanne, Mark, Jenna and Jonathan Scheumann, Jack and Max Sattler, and Rachel and Drew Moser. The pictures of her two beautiful Great-great granddaughters, Avery and Lillian delighted her this past year. As she and Walter often said, “Look what we started”.
During the years of working and retirement Frieda and Walter managed to take vacations to Europe visiting Austria where Walter was born and where Frieda’s parents were born, Germany, Venezuela, Greece and also cruises to the Caribbean Islands and Mexico.
In retirement they divided their time between their condo in Florida and their beloved “Whispering Pines Farm” in Wisconsin where their hobby was raising organic vegetables. Children and grandchildren were always welcome to come pitch a tent and enjoy the beauty of the area. Now grandchildren and great grandchildren look forward to the summer camping weekends.
Walter died in August 1983 leaving a void in Frieda’s heart and life. She moved from the Florida home they had just purchased back to live in a house in Leyden Township near her daughter Linda. She managed her own household until one week after her 93rd birthday when she was taken to the hospital and diagnosed with a heart condition. She could no longer live alone and moved to Sunrise Assisted Living.
During the years between 1983 and 2010 she enjoyed family weddings, graduations, holidays, trips and cruises, a Rose Bowl Game, several cross country train trips and numerous other events. Two cruises were favorites, the Alaskan cruise and the East Coast St. Lawrence Seaway cruise. The latter passed through New York harbor and by the Statue of Liberty, the same view her husband and family saw when they entered the United States for the first time. Frieda was always an enthusiastic participant adding her warmth and humor to each occasion.
Frieda passed away on December 28, 2010 in Glen Ellyn of heart failure. Her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, her brother-in-law, Dr. A. Sattler and his wife, Dolores, and many nieces and nephews survive her.
Frieda was an exceptional woman and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Everyone whose life she touched will always remember her. She lived her life with dignity and courage and was an wonderful example to all of us.
