Irene L Gunkel

Irene Gunkel, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2025, just two days shy of her 101st birthday, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on July 30, 1924, in Flint, Michigan, to Anna and Joseph Granger. Irene was married to George J. Gunkel, with whom she shared 33 wonderful years. Together they built a loving home filled with laughter and unforgettable memories. Irene’s journey through life was marked by her unwavering love for her family, her warm spirit, and her passion for the simple joys in life.

Irene is survived by her children: Meg (Don) Lee, Lynn (Paul) Rebus, George W. Gunkel, Rick (Cindy) Gunkel, and Janet (Bill) Kanis. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, George, her daughter, Patricia Robertson, her brothers Lawrence, Bernard, Raymond, and Robert, and her sisters Genevieve and Patricia.

Irene was blessed with 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren who kept her young at heart. Irene found her greatest happiness in gardening, reading, and being outdoors, but nothing brought her more joy than celebrating life with her family.

A visitation for Irene will be held on Thursday, August 7, 2025 from 10:00 AM-11:00AM at St. Joan of Arc Church, 820 Division St, Lisle, IL 60532. A funeral mass will follow at 11:00 AM.
