Joann Patricia Glavan-Daye cherished family and friends over her full and well-travelled life of 88 years. Joann passed away peacefully on the morning of November 17, 2024 while a resident of the Brookdale Assisted Living facility in Lisle, IL. Our family is grateful for the care and friendship that the Assisted Living care team, residents, dining room servers, therapists, hairdressers, activity coordinators and clinic personnel extended to her over the past year. She felt at home.
Joann saw many changes over her years; yet the constant in her life was family. Born March 17, 1936 in Joliet, IL, Joann is the middle child of William and Mary Picciolo. Joann is survived by her elder brother Matthew of Kentucky and predeceased by her younger sister Mary Lou Young (Dwane), also of Kentucky. She grew up in Joliet, IL and graduated from Joliet Township High School, Class of 1954. Mom married Frederick P. Glavan on November 16, 1957 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Joliet. They raised our family in Joliet and New Lenox, before moving to Mountain Home, Arkansas in retirement. There they made many friends and enjoyed their hobbies and pastimes. Fred predeceased her on May 18, 2000. Remaining in Arkansas, Joann married Robert Daye on July 20, 2002 and they celebrated twenty years together. Bob Daye predeceased her on October 27, 2022. Joann is survived by her three children: Philip (Kimberly) Glavan, Patricia (Robert) Elliot and Martin (Anne) Glavan, her six grandchildren: Kyle (Stephanie) Glavan, Brittney (Andy) Smith, Em Glavan, Thomas Glavan, Stuart Elliot and Tim (Corin) Glavan as well as three great-grandchildren: Campbell Glavan, Weston and Remington Smith. She is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Joann had a rich and full life as a mother as well as a career in administrative positions. In her early years, Joann worked at Walgreens (1952-1953) and Moore's Stove works (1953-1955), US Steel (1955-1958) and later with Continental Grain (1981-1987) and Joliet Republican Printing (1988-1995). Outside of work, Mom had various roles in the following organizations: the Independent Order of Foresters #1103 and the KSKJ (American/Slovenian) Lodge #29 in Illinois, and in Mountain Home AR, the Gamaliel Girls, Welcome Wagon Computer Users Group, Lake Norfork Boat Club and serving as secretary to the Home Owners Association of The Meadows subdivision where she and Bob lived. For twenty years, and very dear to her, was her volunteer work at the Baxter Regional Medical Center maternity ward where she met the newest residents of the Mountain Home regional community, again showing her deep care and concern for children and families.
Regardless of the work Mom pursued outside the household, Mom's focus was on her family and raising three children. Her dedication to us all was evident over the years and it seemed as if she never stopped working for a cause. Mom had a career in all matters important to those around her as she participated in school events, baking wonderful cakes and cooking meals shared between our family and cousins for birthdays and holidays. Red velvet cake, marble cake and her signature pineapple upside down cakes were a specialty. But what would cake be if not for ice cream, Mom's favorite dessert! Joann's motto was "Life without ice cream is no life at all".
Joann's legacy will live onward through her children and family, as we carry a part of her with us in our lives. Together, we will always feel and emulate the love and kindness that Mom exhibited every day. In this spirit, our family requests that everyone enjoy a dish of ice cream and think of her. In memory of Joann and in lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in her name to organizations that were important to her.
