John was a proud Chicagoan- he was an avid White Sox Fan and loved the city he grew up in.
He was also an avid train and streetcar collector and enthusiast – he was even the conductor for the Lisle Polar Express. John worked for General Motors Chevrolet until he retired at 55; he then began his second career as the Fire Commissioner of Lisle, a position he served in for over 20 years until his retirement just two years ago at 90.
He is survived by his loving wife, Joan (nee Haugh) Kelly, and his four children: Mary Lynn (Lee) Schmidt, James Kelly, Cynthia Ann (the late Bob) Erchull, and Diane (Bernie) Mamon. He was the proud grandfather to Jason (Ginnifer), Kristen, Kelly, Joanne, the late Elizabeth, McKenzie, Colin, Kevin, Breanna (Cody), and Brendan, and a loving great-grandfather of seven.
A visitation will take place on Monday, January 9, 2023, from 10:30 A.M. until 11:30 A.M. at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church at 820 Division St. Lisle, IL 60532, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery at 911 North Ave., Naperville, IL 60540.
