You know that day when you realize how humble someone was in life and never bragged about themselves but was a true hero. I had many discussions with my father about his time in Vietnam and he had  mentioned many things he saw there. He mentioned an incident where his platoon was ambushed and how he started firing a grenade launcher to stop the ambush and made all the enemy run away in fear. 

However, he never told me that he was awarded the distinguished service metal for saving the lives of every person in his platoon.

He was always my hero because he taught me to focus on family above all else but now I know he was actually a true hero to many who owe him their very lives.

Tomorrow, we say our final goodbyes to his body and put him near his parents and grandparents who he admired and adored. We will never say goodbye to his soul as he will always be with us in spirit and I will strive to be as good to my family as he was.
