Marjorie Ann Gilmartin (nee Goebel) was born in Sioux City, Iowa, on May 19, 1924. Her parents were Walter and Ann (McDermott) Goebel. At the age of four, Marjorie joined her parents and her older sister Geraldine (William Bulger) when they moved to the southside of Chicago. In the years following, they were joined by her brothers Robert (Aileen) Goebel and Richard (Millie) Goebel.
Marjorie attended Little Flower parish and grammar school. She crowned the Blessed Mother and modeled the graduation dress that was chosen to be worn by the female graduates. Her neighborhood friends Grace, Bren, Marion, Pat and Marge P remained close until their passings.
Marge was both a good student and an active participant in high school activities at Calumet High School, graduating in 1942. Most importantly, she sold a prom ticket to classmate Robert Gilmartin, Jr., and they later dated until their marriage at Little Flower on June 12, 1948.
Bob and Marge were married until Bob’s death in 2003 – 55 years. Three children came along in the 1950’s -Robert E. Gilmartin III (Francine), Diane Corrigan, and Daniel Gilmartin (Diane). Grandchildren Amy Jean Gausemel (Paul), Robert Gilmartin IV, Elizabeth Hohenbery (Dustin), Michael Gilmartin (Aly) and Christopher Corrigan followed. Great-grandchildren Abigail, Cooper and Amelia joined Marge’s crew in her later years.
Many happy occasions were celebrated with Marge’s relatives, cousins, nieces, and nephews, including the O’Rourkes, Bulgers, and Goebels, over the years at Marge’s homes in Mount Greenwood, Orland Park, and Lisle. Marge was known for her prodigious memory, kind heart, and hospitality. She was a wicked practical joker. She was an accomplished bridge player, puzzle solver, voracious reader, and Cubs’ fan.
Marge was a stay-at-home mother while her children were being raised, but before and after she did work at Armour & Company in the stockyards area, EFCO in Evergreen Park, and Argonne National Laboratory.
Marge and her three siblings were certified by the Guiness Book of World Records as having the Highest Combined Age for Four Living Siblings – 383 years and 147 days, as of November 8, 2021.
