Sanford Curtis Allen, known affectionately as "Sonny" by friends and family, was born on January 10, 1939, in Lynch, Kentucky, to the late Louis Allen and Edna Wilson. A true adventurer at heart, Sanford's childhood was filled with explorations of the mountains, lighthearted pranks, and a mischievous spirit that brought joy to everyone around him. He embraced his faith early in life, accepting Christ as his Lord and Savior.
After relocating to Chicago, Sanford connected with his high school sweetheart, Dorothy, and the two built a beautiful life together, raising two daughters, Yolanda Louise and Sandra Delicia. Their love and partnership were the foundation of a family that would grow and thrive. Eventually, they moved to Maywood, Illinois, where Sanford became an active member of 2nd Baptist Church and served faithfully on the Trustee Board.
A lover of the outdoors, Sanford was known for his exceptional hunting and fishing skills, often sharing his expertise with others. His passion for nature also led him to scuba diving, a pursuit he embraced wholeheartedly. As a skilled diver, Sanford traveled the world, immersing himself in the wonders of the ocean and teaching others about the joy of the sport. When he wasn’t in the wilderness or beneath the waves, he could be found nurturing his garden or enjoying quiet moments with Dorothy, watching the birds in their yard.
Sanford was a devoted and hardworking man who spent over 40 years in service at Kolcraft Enterprises, where he retired as Vice President. His natural curiosity and drive led him to excel in various areas, from completing college courses in television repair to becoming fluent in Spanish, which broadened his professional reach across the nation. He was a true Renaissance man, combining intellectual, physical, and social pursuits with grace and mastery.
Though Sanford had a strong and stoic presence, he carried within him a heart of gold. Beneath his tough exterior was a loving, comedic soul who cherished his family above all. His greatest pride and joy were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and he was immensely proud of the legacy he helped to create.
As his health began to decline, Sanford’s greatest desire was to be surrounded by his family, and on December 21, 2024, after a courageous battle with Myelodysplastic Syndromes, he peacefully departed this Earth to be with the Lord. In his final days, he was surrounded by the love of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Sanford was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy. He leaves behind a loving family to cherish his memory: his daughters, Yolanda Tate and Sandra Allen (Janice Harris); his siblings Billie Ruth Wilson and Patricia Allen; his five grandchildren, Curtis Tate (Paula), Taneshia Wilson (Freedom), Brandon McKnight (Jennifer), Nathaniel Tate, and Mykala Walton (Terry); twelve great-grandchildren, Kendrick, Simone, Thai, Talia, Allen, Soleil, Caiden, Carmelo, Arianna, Alysse, Elijah, and Jacob; as well as a host of extended family and friends.
Sanford’s legacy of love, laughter, and faith will continue to inspire all who knew him. His memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of those who were blessed to call him family and friend.
