Doug was preceded in death by his mother, Elsie Shivers; his adoptive father, Forrest “Boots” Shivers; his brother, Tommy Naugher; and his sister, Carolene Bufford.
He is survived by his wife, Suzanne Turner Shivers; his daughter, Casey Shivers (Ryan); his stepdaughter, Katie Choate; brother, Henry Naugher (Linda); nieces, Debra Cossey (Lynn) and Cassandra Cook (Scott); many beloved great-nieces and nephews; and a multitude of friends.
Doug joined the Boy Scouts in El Dorado, Arkansas, and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He worked summers at Camp Logoly outside Magnolia, Arkansas, and often reflected fondly on his experiences there, which included helping campers learn skills to earn merit badges, conducting surveys of camp trails, and working on the waterfront. He graduated from El Dorado High School in 1967, where he was chosen as a delegate to Boys State and a member of Demolay.
Doug proudly volunteered to serve in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, a time when the draft and active duty service were deeply challenging and often unpopular. He served two tours in Vietnam with the 101st Radio Research Company of the Army’s Security Agency, attaining the rank of Specialist 5 (E-5). Doug was a proud member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).
After returning from Vietnam, Doug used the GI Bill to pursue higher education, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR). He then built a successful career in the investment industry, including several years as manager of the mortgage-backed division for Powell and Satterfield, Inc. Doug went on to work with several investment firms throughout his long and dedicated career.
Doug will be remembered for his quick wit, his child-like sense of wonder, and his deep appreciation for history. He found joy in simple moments outdoors, loved animals (especially his three cats: Tabitha, Sophie, and Samson), and often shared his humor and curiosity with those around him
