I’m sitting with my Dad, Lou Schickel today and he is turning 92 in a few days. I’m in search of some of his old timer friends to come over for a celebration. 
I know he always considered Jerry his best friend. We were both wishing he was still here with us to come celebrate Lou. 
We decided to read Jerry’s obituary as a way to think of him. 
These two played tennis together for 50 years. I remember sitting in the back seat of my dad’s Cadillac with those two in the front seats. They joked like an old married couple. That same trip I was at his house and saw his leather toiletry bag, it had seen brighter days. It was Christmas, so I went and bought him a pretty new leather toiletry bag for my Dad to give him.
 He called to say thank you and asked that the next time I come over, to please take a look at his old car and see if Lou could replace that with a new white Cadillac. Still gives me a good giggle whenever I think of that. 
I was always impressed that he was so strong And  a vegetarian And so cool with such great motorcycle style. 
An inspiration to us all! 
I’m going to the gym right now!

Jerry was a great guy, good tennis player and probably a very fine pilot.  I was one of the first to play tennis with him at the racquet club and we played a lot over the next several year.  I truly enjoyed his dry sense of humor and wit.  He is greatly missed, but he had a very long and engaging  life.

I’m very saddened to have just learned of Col. Saubers’ passing. He was my kindergarten teacher at Gilliam from 1970 to 1971. Although it has been more than 50, years, I remember him well. Thank you Sir, for your multiple services to our nation. Ron Koon ronaldkoon@yahoo.com

Jerry was one of my favorite tennis partners.  He was older and not as mobile as I  was.  I think the first time we played together, he told me "Frank, If the ball comes to me I will get it, if it doesn't, it  is yours."  He was spot on. I loved his tenacity to stay with the game, and hated to see him stop.  We had many good times.  I consider him special!

Since 1975, Living at the Little Rock Racquet Club, swimming on the Dolphins swim team, playing tennis, or life guarding: I saw the Colonel daily walking up to club from his house to play tennis or just being at club all day. He always ask kids if they  like to play and learn.  As a kid, you first looked at this man scarred, but he was very low key and loved teaching us about life.  Even as we got older and growing up with Suky, he was always interested in us . I have always knew  him as “COLONEL” and called him that ever time I saw him.  
Love and prayers to the family on this day of celebration.

Sometime in the '80s, my wife gave me an 8 week old puppy (that I had not requested and didn't know its breed).  A day later I was driving through Foxcroft and saw a dog that had to be the grown up version of my pup so I stopped to ask the gentleman who was out in the yard.  "What kind of dog is that".  He told me "Rottweiler" and introduced himself as Jerry Sauber.  We got to talking and before long he was loading canine equipment he no longer used into my car.   As time went by, I would often stop to discuss our dogs and then the conversation turned to another mutual interest: street motorcycles.  Soon, I was seeing Jerry frequently at the LRAC and our friendship grew.  He was so selfless in getting me started caring for my new dog with all the right stuff.  What a great guy.  I extend my sincere condolences to all the family who must consider themselves blessed to have shared life with such a wonderful man.  And I was blessed by his friendship

I had the privilege of traveling with Jerry on two motorcycle trips with him.  The first was the 1 month trip I took with him before Carole and I were married 30 years ago.  What a month it was.  One of our first stops was in Fairfax SD to visit his brother.  Everyone in his family lived well into their nineties.  Anyway, after 3 weeks, Carole was strongly suggesting I get home ASAP.  I vividly remember Jerry and I eating dinner in Tucumcari, NM at pizza hut.  After a few tense calls with Carole, I shared with Jerry that I might have gone too far with a one month trip so close to our wedding day.  He said, “John, don’t worry about it.  When you get home put your bike and the garage, don’t touch it for two weeks, give Carole a big hug, and tell her how much you missed her.”  It worked like a charm.  That wisdom from a then 69 year old man still rings true today.  God Speed, Jerry! 

I will always remember "The Colonel", a fellow motorcycle enthusiast and friend, a gentleman.  We  would often encounter one another on the roads around central Arkansas or at one of the motorcycle shops or other motorcycle haunts. We shared many common interests.

As I do, I am confident that Jerry's family and friends have many fond memories to comfort them at this time and in the future.

I think The Colonel once had the honor of piloting a plane for one of the US Presidents.

So very sorry to learn about Jerry’s passing.  I played a lot of tennis with him at the Little Rock Racquet Club and we participated in several team tennis matches in and out of state.  He was an icon at the Racquet Club and I, as well as many others, enjoyed being around him.  I had intended to visit him at the retirement home,  then the pandemic hit.  God bless a great man!

He will be missed by all his friends at the Racquet Club.

I'm listening to the Bill Evans Trio...  jazz with my second cup of coffee this 
December morning. Feeling sad and joy with the relief that Colonel Saubers is resting in peace.  So I did not know him when he rode the BMW. He never spoke of his two tours in Vietnam. I did not know him when he was a kindergarten teacher. He was truly a gentleman. He shared with me his love for high fidelity, classical music, sports cars, motorcycles, darts and import beer. Took the time to teach me to properly throw a dart with touch. I have not had a dartboard for years and it's time to fix this. We talked little back then and not talked in years but I recall that when he spoke it was respectful and kind. He was always a good listener. Rest in peace Colonel Saubers truly one of the good old boys!!!

What an honor it was to know this man for a few short years at Woodland Heights.  I was a private caregiver to one of his neighbors on the 3rd floor.  I would see him at dinner and then again when I would check the mail.  He and his very dedicated daughter would always be playing pool. I loved his spirit , his warm smile and wittiness.  I know he’s soaring above now, with his beloved wife and Bruno! ~ Rest in Love ~
