Martha Jennings Humbard

Martha graduated from Little Rock Central High School and earned degrees from Ouachita Baptist University and the University of Central Arkansas. She spent more than 30 years teaching at McClellan and Oak Grove high schools, with many students remaining dear to her long after leaving her classroom.

Martha never met a stranger. Short in stature but feisty in the best way, she was quick-witted, loved a good conversation, and was the family storyteller, usually with more details than anyone knew they needed. The eldest of three sisters, she was affectionately known as “Sissy” and shared a lifelong closeness with her sisters, MariKay and Michelle. Sissy eventually became the name her nieces, nephews, and grandchildren knew and loved as well.

Martha and her husband, Robert (Bob) Humbard, shared 59 years of marriage. During Bob's service in the United States Marine Corps, she traveled with him for Marine Corps trainings and other military events. She was always there for their son, Stephen, and was especially proud to see him become a doctor. His basketball years also gave rise to her famous “State Champion Chicken and Rice,” a favorite family and school memory.

Nothing brought Sissy more joy than her grandchildren, Taylor and Aidan. She tried never to miss a ballgame, concert, or opportunity to cheer them on.

Martha grew up at Tyler Street Baptist Church and later served for many years as organist at Cedar Heights Baptist Church in North Little Rock. She was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church in Little Rock and treasured her community ladies’ Bible study.

Martha is survived by her husband, Robert; her son, Dr. Stephen Humbard (Alicia); grandchildren, Taylor and Aidan Humbard; sisters, MariKay Tillett and Michelle Cox (Cary); sister-in-law, Brenda Pearce (Mike); seven nieces and nephews; many great-nieces and great-nephews; and numerous beloved cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jennings and Berneice Howard.

Martha will be remembered for her devotion to family, her quick wit, her many stories, and above all, for always being there for the people she loved.

Services will be held Tuesday September 8, 2026, at Pinecrest Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 7401 Hwy 5 N., Alexander, AR, 72002. Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM. Funeral Service will begin at 12:00 PM officiated by Chaplain Rusty Howard, and Pastor Scott Jackson. Private burial will follow.
