OBITUARY

Sue Hankins Strickland

August 20, 1935December 2, 2019

Sue Hankins Strickland was born to Elzie and Lavada Hankins of Itawamba County, Mississippi, on August 20, 1935, and lived a busy and joyful life until December 2, 2019, when angels carried her home.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, David Hankins and John Hankins. She is survived by her sisters, Burvil Thaxton and Wilma Jean Mcanally; her husband of over 51 years, Terrell Strickland; her son, Joel Strickland, and his wife, Ebonie; her daughter, April Strickland Harrell, and her husband, Sean; her two beloved granddaughters, Abigail Grace Harrell and Hadley Rae Strickland; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

A proud graduate of Ole Miss, Sue has always valued and supported public education. After retiring from a career in teaching, she went on to later serve from 1996 until 2006 on the Little Rock School Board and was Board President for two years. Her dedication to education naturally extended to her own children and grandchildren, as evidenced in her home stocked with books and educational games which she loved to use to feed their passion for learning from a young age. As part of her zest for life-long learning, Sue particularly enjoyed traveling with her husband both at home and abroad, including trips to Scotland, England, Canada, Mexico, and throughout the U.S., with many of her favorite adventures beginning on cruise ships.

Sue and her husband have been active members of First Baptist Church of Mayflower and have lived their lives in service to Christ and others. Sue loved to cook and plan dinner parties, and she took delight in quilting and sewing for her granddaughters. She flexed her exceptional creative skills with Do-It-Yourself projects that filled the homes of her family and friends with everything from delicious foods and canned goods to homemade soaps, scrubs, and creams.

Sue’s family would like to thank First Baptist Church of Mayflower, their neighbors in the community of River Plantation, and the Intensive Care Unit and other medical personnel of UAMS for their devoted care of Sue and her loved ones during her final days.
