Susan Thell Young-Larzelere
February 14, 1942 – August 2, 2019
Susan Thell Young-Larzelere, 77, passed away peacefully in Little Rock on August 2, 2019, from Alzheimer's complications. Sue was born February 14, 1942, in Searcy, Arkansas. The youngest daughter of T. H. and Norma Young, it seemed no accident that Sue was born on Valentine’s Day, for she embraced life and celebration in so many ways. Her early years were full of love and laughter, adventuring with her two sisters, Ann Ekman (deceased) and Kay Wright Davis (of Fayetteville), taking ballet classes, and even surviving a tornado.
After graduating high school, Sue moved to California and worked as a flight attendant for American Airlines for almost a decade. She loved traveling and exploring the world, but home, family, and friends were never far from her mind. Sue moved back to Little Rock in the early ‘70s and married H. T. Larzelere, Jr. (Trip), with whom she raised two amazing sons, H. T. Larzelere III (Tripler) and Thomas Alexander Larzelere (Alex). Sue built a strong circle of friends in the Little Rock area through hostessing and serving the community; she devoted much of her time to the Arkansas chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Sue and Trip remained close as parents, grandparents, and friends the rest of her life.
Jonesboro was Sue’s home for the latter part of her life, and her natural gifts for hospitality were significant in the success of a number of restaurant ventures with her second husband (now divorced), William Hurt, Jr.. As the daughter of a well-known food talent, Norma Young, Sue knew good food! She also had an eye for and appreciation of beautiful things, never met a person she couldn’t charm, and never saw a baby she didn’t want to hold. The last chapter of Sue’s life was spent back in Little Rock, enjoying the vibrant downtown culture and being doted on by her two favorite men, her sons Alex and Tripler. Sue is preceded in death by her parents, T. H. and Norma Young, her sister, Ann Ekman, and her nephew, Kevin Ekman. She is survived by a loving family: sons, Alex Larzelere, Tripler Larzelere and daughter-in-law, Sarah Larzelere; grandchildren, Charlotte Larzelere, H. T. Larzelere IV (Henry) and Emily Larzelere; sister, Kay Wright Davis; nieces and nephews, Tom Ekman, Robert Wright, Leah Tucker and nephew-in-law, Sterling Tucker; great-nieces and great-nephews, Diana Ekman, Tres Tucker, Kathryn Tucker, Ray Elizabeth Wright and Elaina Wright.
A service of celebration and remembrance will be held at 2 pm on Thursday, August 8, 2019, at St. James United Methodist Church in Little Rock, Arkansas. Memorials may be made in Sue’s name to Alzheimer’s Arkansas, 201 Markham Center Drive, Little Rock, Arkansas 72205 or St. James United Methodist Church, 321 Pleasant Valley Drive, Little Rock, Arkansas 72212.
