Walter A. Marshaleck, beloved husband, father, grandfather, veteran, educator, and devoted servant of Christ, entered into eternal rest at the age of 83. He passed peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family and the faith that carried him throughout his life.
A proud and decorated veteran of the United States Air Force, Walter served in the Vietnam War as a navigator. After being shot down in combat, his courage and heroism earned him three Purple Hearts and the opportunity to attend pilot training. He went on to fly T-38s and B-52 bombers as part of the Strategic Air Command (SAC Headquarters), and later became a T-38 instructor pilot—one of his most proud roles. In the later part of his military career, he served on the Inspector General (IG) team as a safety inspector, conducting vital inspections of Air Force bases across the country.
Following his military retirement, Walter devoted himself to education. He began as an ROTC instructor at Pine Bluff High School, where he later served as assistant principal. He then moved to Little Rock to become the head principal at Mabelvale Junior High while earning his doctorate in education. His heart for students, especially those facing challenges, led him to continue working in retirement at the Alternative Learning Center (ALC), helping underprivileged youth with compassion and discipline.
Walter had a passion for learning and a deep appreciation for the world around him. He loved working on home projects, painting with oils and pastels, caring for his animals, and immersing himself in nature and science—especially space and the wonders of creation. Outside in the backyard was his favorite place to talk with God.
His faith in Jesus Christ was the foundation of his life. As a faithful member of Christ the King Catholic Church, Walter served as a Eucharistic Minister, bringing communion and comfort to homebound seniors and hospital patients. He was known for his warm “God bless,” his readiness to share the love of Jesus, and his deep devotion to his Savior. He loved his family with his whole heart and never missed an opportunity to tell others about the hope he found in Christ.
Walter is survived by his loving wife, Maria Marshaleck; his three children, Chris Hayden (Warren), Donna Tappan (Dave), and Bing Marshaleck (Jane); and his treasured grandchildren, Megan Tappan (Taylor), Sam Hayden, Anna Tappan, Charlie Hayden, Jamie Marshaleck, and Maggie Marshaleck.
He lived a life marked by courage, faith, service, and love. He is now with Jesus, whom he loved so dearly and served so faithfully.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.” — Matthew 25:21
