Alan B. Roth died October 31, 2016. He was 86 years old. Alan was born and raised in Newark, NJ where he lived with his late parents, Rose (nee Polikoff) and Benjamin, and his late brother, Robert. Upon graduating from South Side High School in 1948, Alan enlisted in the Air Force where he served honorably during the Korean War until December 1952. After leaving the military, Alan joined his father in the family business, BJ Roth & Sons, Inc. (1943 - 2010), licensed hearing aid dispensers in Jersey City, NJ. In the 1970’s the business expanded with locations throughout Hudson County. In 1991, Alan’s eldest daughter, Marsha, joined the family business. Alan officially retired in 2008.
In 1954, Alan fell in love at first sight with the late Marlene Sosne of Brooklyn, NY. The couple married in 1955 and in 1960 moved from Newark, NJ to Cranford, NJ where they raised their four daughters. Marlene and Alan enjoyed 39 years of marriage, a match made in heaven, until her death in 1994. Preceding her passing, Marlene said of Alan, “No woman could ask for a better love and companion. He was a prince among men.”
Alan was a man committed to his family, faith, and community. As a board certified hearing instrument specialist, one of his greatest personal rewards was assisting deaf children hear for the very first time through the use of hearing aids. He was an active member of the Lions Club and the International Hearing Aid Society. In the late ’60’s and ’70’s, Alan helped feed the hungry in Hudson County as a volunteer with Meals on Wheels. Alan was also an active member of his former synagogue Anshe Chesed in Linden, NJ.
He is survived by his four daughters, Marsha, Sharon (Isaac Lichtenfeld), Debra (Peter Locker) and Norma (Joel Penn) and five grandchildren, Brandon and Carly Stein and Shayna, Jeremy, and Marlena Penn. Alan is also survived by his loving and devoted Renee, Renee Bitner of Montville, NJ and her extended family. Alan and Renee felt blessed to find true happiness a second time in their lives and spent nine wonderful years together. Alan was his father’s son, a gentleman and a gentle man. The family asks donations in his memory be made to Congregation Shaya Ahavat Torah, 113 Hawkins Avenue, Parsippany, NJ 07054.
