

Betty was a graduate of Cornell University and obtained a Masters Degree in Political Science from Columbia University.
At the age of 47, Betty began her career as a teacher at Newark Academy in Livingston. For the next 25 years she was a revered teacher, teaching courses such as AP US History and Government and mentoring hundreds of students. She was also instrumental in creating the school’s community service program. Betty also spent a number of years coaching the girl’s varsity tennis team.
Betty was a passionate supporter of Israel and Jewish charities in northern New Jersey and was active in Democratic politics. She served as vice-president of the League of Women Voters of New Jersey and was a member of the West Orange Zoning Board.
As a lifelong athlete, she particularly loved competitive golf and enjoyed tennis and bridge, hobbies she shared with her husband and children. She served on the board of Community Agencies Corporation in Newark through which she was involved with SCEEP, a tutoring and mentoring program that she linked with student volunteer tutors at Congregation Agudath Israel in Caldwell. After her retirement, she enjoyed her volunteer work with the WAE Center in West Orange, an enrichment center for individuals with developmental disabilities.
Betty is survived by her sons, John (Ann) and Scott (Wendy), and her grandchildren, Daniel (Rebecca), Rachel (Corey), Cody and Becky. Her husband of 50 years, Richard, died in 1999.
Funeral services will be held 1:00PM Tuesday at Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, 68 Short Hills Road, Livingston, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Newark Academy for the Betty Newman Scholarship Fund.
