On March 14, 2020, Christian Jackson Victor Niles of Millburn, NJ passed away in Long Hill Twp. New Jersey Christian, known by all as “CJ”, was a 2016 graduate of Millburn High School and currently was studying psychology at Montclair State University.
CJ was a magnet, who made fast and long-standing friendships wherever he went. He could make any task seem fun and became a leader in any group to which he belonged. From band, to baseball in the Millburn-Short Hills Little League, the Springfield Soccer Club and the Millburn High School Freshman Football team, CJ was a source a fun and camaraderie, and a true teammate.
CJ brought the most joy to Scouting, first with Cub Scout Pack 20 in South Orange and then Troop 5, Maplewood, BSA, where he earned the Rank of Eagle Scout. For his Eagle project, with the assistance of his Troop, CJ performed a complete “gut-rehab” of the Board Room at First Presbyterian & Trinity Church. CJ was a Patrol Leader and held other positions of leadership in the Troop. He loved his many friends, Scoutmaster Roger Brauchli and the incredible Assistant Scoutmasters of Troop 5. In life, CJ valued friendship most of all.
CJ had started to use his talents for leadership and charisma as a lifeguard, a supervising referee at the Millburn Recreation Department and in sales at Crosstown Solutions in Long Island City, NY.
CJ, a triplet, is survived by his beloved brothers and fellow Eagle Scouts, David Niles, Jr. and Harrison Niles; his parents Judy Rosenthal and David Niles, Sr.; grandmother Ann Rosenthal of Millburn, Aunt Susan and Uncle Bill Gould of Whitehouse Station, NJ; Aunt and Uncle Bruce and Debbie Niles of Hammond, NY; Aunt Claudia Niles, of Colonie, NY; Aunt Linda Kraft of Schoharie, NY and cousins David and Tyler Gould, Amy Burnham, Samantha Smith and Eric, Hope and Trevor Niles.
Visitation will take place at Bernheim-Apter Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, at 68 Old Short Hills Road, on Wednesday, March 18th from 3PM to 7PM. Due to Covid-19 concerns, we understand the needs of those over 60 or who have health risks, and understand if you cannot attend. For that reason, a more formal celebration of CJ’s life will take place at First Presbyterian & Trinity Church in South Orange, NJ later in the spring or early summer. In lieu of flowers, donations in CJ’s honor can be sent to “Troop 5 Maplewood, BSA” 44 Clinton Avenue, Maplewood, NJ 07040.
