David was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1926 and graduated from East Orange High School in 1944. Shortly thereafter he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a Signalman and Gunner in the South Pacific during WWII. He graduated from Rutgers University in 1949 with a degree in Economics.
David was involved in the manufacture and marketing of private label ladies’ lingerie for over 40 years, first as an associate in his father’s firm, M. H. Goldsmith & Co., Inc., and then as President and Owner of DLG & Associates, Inc., based in New York City’s storied Garment District, and as President of David Goldsmith Enterprises, a lingerie manufacturer in Somerville, Tennessee.
After his retirement in 1992, David sought out active engagement in community affairs. During the 1990s, he was President of The Mental Health Association of Essex County. In addition, he was a member of AJC National Committee on Human Rights and served on the Boards of several prominent local organizations, including The Mental Health Association of New Jersey, The American Jewish Committee—Metro NJ, and New Jersey Jewish News. He was appointed as a Panel Member of both the Fee Arbitration and Ethics Committees of The Supreme Court of New Jersey and served for seven years as a volunteer mediator on the Community Dispute Resolution Committee of the Superior Court of Essex County.
David is survived by his children, Amy Charmatz, Peter Goldsmith, and Jane Davis; and his granddaughters Lauren and Julia Davis.
