David Raviv was born David Rabinovitch in 1947 in Afula, Israel, and was raised on Kibbutz Messilot, a small farming commune that his parents helped found. As a young man, David fought in the Six-Day War in 1967 as an artillery sergeant, and spent time stationed in the occupied Sinai Peninsula and guarding Dimona, Israel’s secret nuclear facility.
David then returned to the kibbutz, where he met Susan Hersh, a college student from New Jersey. David eventually moved to the United States and married Susan. He spent several years in New York City where he earned a business degree from Baruch College. He and Susan then moved to Springfield, NJ, where they spent 42 years and raised their three children. David worked in the retail clothing and mortgage businesses, among other pursuits. He and Susan recently moved to Florham Park.
David had a large circle of close friends in both the United States and Israel. He loved traveling, movies, history books, good food, opera, riding his bike in the Delaware Valley, and photography. He recently became an expert picture framer.
David is survived by his wife Susan, his sister Ruti Salmi of Tel Aviv, his children Adam Raviv (Deborah) of Washington, D.C., Shaun Raviv (Miranda Kaplan) of Atlanta, and Tamar Reiner (Jonathan) of Albany, and his beloved grandchildren Daniel, Daphne, Asher, Saga, and Hudson. He was predeceased by his parents, Yoska and Miriam Rabinovitch, and a sister, Rivka Knaani.
