While Ed’s professional accomplishments were extraordinary—earning him respect as a leader in the accounting, turnaround, restructuring, and bankruptcy professions for more many decades—his greatest achievement was the life he built with the people he loved.
Throughout his distinguished career, Ed served as Partner, Managing Partner, and later Chairman of Bederson LLP. Joining the firm in its infancy, he was instrumental in developing its insolvency and litigation services division, helping establish Bederson as one of the first accounting firms in New Jersey with a nationally recognized niche bankruptcy practice. Over the course of his career, Ed was personally involved in hundreds of bankruptcy and restructuring matters and was widely sought after for his expertise in bankruptcy, forensic accounting, and corporate turnarounds. His reputation for integrity, wisdom, and financial expertise earned him appointments as an examiner, trustee, receiver, mediator, arbitrator, fiscal agent, and court-appointed fiduciary in numerous complex matters. Even at 85 years young, Ed was appointed by a Bankruptcy Judge in Central Islip to serve as Independent Managing Director, a testament to the respect he commanded throughout the profession.
Earlier in his career, Ed served as Partner and later President of a member brokerage firm of the New York and American Stock Exchange, where he successfully led the transition from manual operations to automation and oversaw the transfer of more than 10,000 retail accounts. He was elected as the sole public member of the Nominating Committee of the American Stock Exchange Board of Governors.
A recognized leader in his field, Ed maintained a prominent role in the financial and business community for more than 45 years. He served as President of the New Jersey State Board of Accountancy and was a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Bankruptcy Institute and the National Association of Bankruptcy Trustees. He was a Certified Insolvency and Restructuring Advisor (CIRA) and a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE). Throughout his career, he frequently testified as an expert witness, lectured at professional seminars and universities, and authored articles on turnaround management and Chapter 11 reorganizations.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Ed was deeply committed to service and philanthropy. He was a founding member of The Valerie Fund and served the organization in numerous leadership roles, including Treasurer, Vice President, and Board Member. His dedication to helping children and families facing cancer reflected the compassion and generosity that defined his life. He also served on the boards of Daughters of Israel, East Orange General Hospital, the Garden State Cancer Center Foundation, The Scholarship Fund for Inner-City Children, the PAL Boys’ Club, the Ruth Bass Foundation, and numerous other charitable and civic organizations. At the request of President Richard Nixon, he served as the State Citizens’ Chairman of the Small Business Administration.
In recognition of his remarkable contributions to his profession and community, Ed received numerous honors throughout his lifetime, including the NJBIZ Icon Award in 2020, designation as a Distinguished Fellow of the Association of Insolvency & Restructuring Advisors, a Lifetime Leadership Award from the Global Turnaround Management Association, and recognition as The Valerie Fund’s Thanksgiving Ball Honoree in 2013. Yet despite the many accolades he received, Ed remained humble, always more interested in helping others succeed than in celebrating his own accomplishments.
For 35 years, Ed was the devoted husband and soulmate of his beloved wife, Abby. He was a loving father to Robyn (Eric) Fineberg, Marnie Bond, Nicole (Jon) Braveman, Joanna (Marc) Brody, and Geoffrey (Ellen) Westrich. He was an adoring grandfather to his five grandsons, Zachary, Daniel, Andrew, Sam, and Will, who were among the greatest joys of his life. He also survived by his beloved sister Anne Kravet.
Ed was the kindest, most genuine person you could ever hope to meet. He had a remarkable ability to connect people, build friendships, and make everyone feel welcome. A natural mentor, he led by example, teaching all of us—especially his grandsons—the importance of kindness, generosity, integrity, loyalty, and an unwavering work ethic. He believed that success meant lifting others up, and he lived that belief every day.
Though he was widely admired for his professional achievements and community leadership, those closest to him will remember his warmth, humility, wisdom, humor, and boundless love for family and friends. He earned the respect and admiration of everyone fortunate enough to know him, not because of the titles he held, but because of the man he was.
Ed’s legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched, the family he cherished, and the values he instilled in all of us. We will miss him beyond words and carry his love and example with us always.
