Mr. Gorelick was my Spanish teacher and also my Drivers Ed teacher.  He was so funny and such a good teacher.  He was my favorite.  Condolences and God bless.

I have just learned about Mr. Gorelick's passing.  My condolences to the family of this wonderful man.  He was my Spanish teacher in the 60s and here we are 50 years later and I remember him because of his amazing personality, caring, great teaching abilities and one of the most loved teachers I have ever had. I am a Livingston High School (LHS) class of 1969 graduate and just found out about Mr. Gorelick's passing. I feel compelled to express my sincere condolences to the Gorelick family.

Mr. Gorelick was my Spanish teacher my sophomore and junior years at LHS and had a significant impact on my life, which I wouldn't realize until a decade or more after. Spanish was not my favorite, or my easiest subject. But Mr. Gorelick made it fun. He also was responsible for one of the most unique experiences of my life.

Sometime in the early-spring of 1968 Mr. Gorelick ran into my father in a hardware store. How he knew it was my father I don't know. He told my dad about a summer exchange program called Open Door and that he wanted to sponsor me for it. My dad came home excited about it, and thus I spent the summer of 1968 in Costa Rica.

The 10-weeks I spent in Costa Rica offered a unique experience and my first exposure to a foreign culture. When I returned to school for my senior year I didn't have Mr. Gorelick as a teacher and, to my everlasting regret, didn't have an opportunity to discuss the experience with him. This was all on me as I had a rough time re-acclimating to being home and became somewhat withdrawn. I last saw him when my sister graduated from LHS in 1973. I said hello, but wasn't sure he recognized me.

I studied Spanish for three more years in undergraduate school at the University of Tennessee and moved to Los Angeles in the mid-1970s. Los Angeles is in many ways a microcosm of a Latin American country and I had ample opportunity to speak and listen to Spanish in the 13 years I lived there. I also spoke Spanish quite often when I was in graduate school at the University of Southern California. One of my best friends from those days is Chilean, and my favorite teacher and mentor at USC was of Mexican decent. Consequently, I became (if not fluent) quite conversant in the language. I remain so today and it has helped me in my studying of Italian over the past few years.

Without equivocation I can say Mr. Gorelick was my favorite teacher in high school and one of my favorites of all time. As the 40th reunion of the LHS Class of 1969 approached in September 2009 I thought of how great it would be if Mr. Gorelick made an appearance. I had it in my mind to start a conversation with him in Spanish and see if he remembered me.
 
I can still hear Mr. Gorelick's laugh and his always calling me shtick, whatever that meant. He was a terrific teacher; a warm-hearted and generous man; and a class act all the way. His legacy is the impact he had on me, and so many others, to the extent that we think of him almost a half-century later. It is a clear indicator of a life well-lived. God bless him and God rest his soul.

My deepest sympathies to the Gorelick family. I had Mr. Gorelick for Spanish I & II at Rahway High School in 1959-1961. To use a term from the 50's, he was undoubtedly the coolest teacher that  I've ever had. And a great teacher. When he became the advisor to the Spanish Club, we had to have our meetings in the auditorium in order to accommodate everyone. It seemed that everyone wanted to be in that club, whether they were taking Spanish or not. I lived & practiced right next door in Florham Park for 40 years & had I known that he was only a mile or so away, I would have loved to have seen him again after all those years. My thoughts & prayers are with you all at this very sad time.

To the Gorelick family I am sorry to hear of your loss. I have fond memories from Monroe Gasrdens in Hillside as a little boy and the time Jeffrey accidental hit me with a golf club and Eli rushed me to the doctor. About 10-15 years ago I ran across Eli on the golf course and was greeted by a big loud Michael as I was about to hit my shot! It has been a long time. All my best in your time of sorrow. I was "fortunate" enough to fail 10th Grade Spanish in 1977, which gave me the opportunity to be in Eli's summer school class that year. I say without hesitation that he was one of THE best teachers I ever had: good-natured, good-humored, inspiring, and caring. I actually looked forward to class! Mr. Gorelick was a great educator who I learned a lot from. He instilled discipline in me and helped me to see the right way to look at things. He was a professsional who cared about what he was doing. Ill also never forget him singing the national anthem at my wrestling matches.

So sorry to hear of Mr. Gorelicks passing. He was a great man....funny and friendly....yet stern and intimidating at the proper times. Mr Gorelick was my Spanish teacher  1971 1972 1973; I studied AP Spanish with him. I had many fine teachers at LHS but Mr. Gorelick was my favorite and had the greatest postive influence on me.  We sang old Spanish songs in his class and he used to sing for us I remember NOCHE de RONDA and MARIA especially. I still have Spanish books he gave me. I became a Spanish and bilingual teacher, married a girl from Spain, my son is a Spanish teacher in Arizona, my daughter is a bilingual dual immersion teacher in San Diego. So Mr. Gorelick's influence has affected us over the generations.  He is proverbial in our house and I still tell stories about him and quote him!   God bless his name and soul! Eil Gorelick was a wonderful human being and a good man. He was my teacher and my friend and I miss him and mourn him.  But I will never forget him. My sincere condolences to his family. Let it be a comfort to know he was so deeply loved and respected by so many. Shalom!

Eli had a long and distinguished career at Livingston High School, where he touched the lives of so many students and staff members. I had the pleasure of working with him for seven of those years in which I served as principal. I join them, his family and many friends in mourning his loss.

My LHS tennis coach, who believed more in people and potential than in pedigree... Mr. Gorelick, know that you made a difference in more lives than you would ever believe.

Mr. Gorelick used to come to chorus class and sing duets with me.  It was an honor to have an assistant principal who appreciated the value of music.  He was a dear soul, and I am so glad to have known him.  Z"l, Mr. Gorelick.

I am a 1984 graduate of LHS. Mr. Gorelick was one of the bright spots of high school. He loved the arts, and had an infectious smile. I only had one "official" encounter and even as he issued my suspension, he tempered punishment with a sense of humor. His dedication to the students of Livingston schools was evident, and you didn't have to look closely. He will be missed. Condolences to his family.

Mr. Gorelick made such an impact to all that he touched at LHS. I graduated '85. I remember the infectious smile and warm heart he had for everyone. He was tough, but fair. So sorry to hear of his passing.

As a 1982 LHS graduate, I remember what a fantastic singing voice Mr. Gorelick had!  We would go in the soundproof booth in the music room and I would play piano and he would sing.  What a friendly, beautiful person.  You will be missed!  Rest in Peace.

I'm a 1971 graduate of LHS, and although I was not his student, I remember his popularity among fellow students. I am saddened by his passing.

Mr. Gorelick was one of those rare individuals who understood and liked working with the teenagers at LHS.  I count myself lucky to have had the opportunity to have him as my Behind-the-Wheel driving instructor in the summer of 1976.  I still remember the day he taught me how to parallel park, as well as the way he played the bongo drums on the dashboard as I was navigating the circle in front of the school.  God Bless you.

I graduated in 1984, Mr.Gorelick was a great man with a huge heart!! His thick accent still rings clear in my mind along with his laugh!!

One of Livingston High School's legendary figures. To know him was to love him. For over thirty years, he was a part of my life. From my days as a student at LHS and then later as a faculty member, Eli Gorelick had an inescapable presence that influenced me, and everyone else who came into contact with him. Most remarkable were the often brief, but unforgettable interludes that would occur daily and always leave me smiling.
 His humor was keen, his presence was inescapable and his heart was huge. Never taking work - or himself - too seriously, he had a unique gift for making the mundane routine of any day in school uproariously funny. By doing so, he somehow was capable of forcing you to refocus on why you were there and what you were trying to accomplish. He will long be remembered for his contributions to our community and will always be loved and missed by the countless numbers of individuals whose lives he touched.

I have a lot of memories of Mr. Gorelick.  He tutored my oldest brother so he was at our house every week.  He always had a smile on his face and a kind word and always took the time to speak with me and was genuinely interested in what I had to say.  
When I was went to LHS, he did right by me many times when he didn't have to.  He was a good man.  I am sad to hear of his passing but my heart is warmed to think of him.  May his memory be a blessing.

Eli Gorelick was an amazing teacher.  He was my teacher for 2 years during my time at Livingston High.  I will always cherish his humor and his support.  He championed the underdog and supported people like me who were so shy.  About ten years after graduation I had occasion to be at the high school.  As I was strolling down the hall, I heard a booming voice telling me to "get back to class".  As I started to laugh I turned... Eli saw my face and began to smile.  He greeted me warmly with a bear hug.  He was a delightful man.  May his memory be a blessing.
