Ellis is survived by his children: Lewis Hoch of Bala Cynwyd, PA; Cynthia Hoch Brettman (Lee) of Brookline, MA; and Leslie Hoch Lebow (Andrew) of Short Hills, NJ; his grandchildren, Dr. Ari Brettman (Irene), Shira Brettman Jaffe (Lonne), Laura Lebow, Matthew Lebow, Benjamin Hoch, Adam Hoch, Ross (Michelle) Shuster; and his great-grandchildren, Eva and Micah Jaffe and Nathan, Yael and Ilan Brettman. He is also survived by his brother, Dr. Gerald Hoch (Joyce) of Holmdel, NJ, and many nieces and nephews.
Ellis was born and bred in Bayonne, NJ. He entered N.Y.U at the age of 16, where he completed his B.S. degree and began his M.A. In the summer of 1949, he met Joyce while vacationing in Belmar. They were married two years later. At the age of 22, Ellis was the youngest person to pass the New Jersey C.P.A. Licensing Exam, and went on to proudly practice accounting for over sixty years.
As a young couple, Ellis and Joyce bought their first home in East Brunswick, where they were founding members of the East Brunswick Jewish Center. After moving, they spent their next 20 wonderful years in West Orange, followed by 23 years of empty-nesting in Morristown, where they were active members of B’nai Shalom and The Morristown Jewish Center, respectively. With their children starting to head off to college and beyond, Ellis and Joyce traveled extensively.
In 2016, they moved to Crane’s Mill in Caldwell, where they enjoyed yet another community of friends. After almost 69 years of marriage, his beloved Joyce passed away in 2021. Ellis continued to enjoy his community of friends, sharing his stories, doling out advice, playing his weekly bridge games…and, mostly, taking enormous pride in his greatest, most beloved treasure of all: his family. As he would often say: “I’m a lucky guy.”
