Eudie was born to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Nerenberg in Buffalo, NY August 21, 1926. Eudie met and later married Shea Schachter of Newark on March 17, 1946. The Schachters built a home and family in Linden and the family tree has deep roots as the Schachter name still exists in their hometown. Eudie helped Shea and his brother Saul build a business that stood for many years – Schachter Realty – which was well known not only in Linden, but throughout Union County into the 1990’s. While Shea was building the business, Eudie raised her 3 boys, David (deceased), Marc, and Gary (deceased). She ensured that all 3 of the boys were educated, well read, active, and tough as nails. While most people would think raising these 3 boys was adventurous enough, Eudie decided once her youngest son was in high school to get a Masters Degree in Gerontology from Columbia University, graduating with honors in 1971. The adventures didn’t stop there, as most of her friends and family would come to learn, Eudie could never sit still – whether it was playing golf, fishing on her boat, or the many trips she took around the world, she loved to travel and shared that with her children and grandchildren. However, according to her, the best part of any trip she took was getting there. Most of us learned this the hard way and had to plan for the extra time we took getting lost! Eudie loved hosting for Friday night dinners and holidays and a lot of her family and friends recall packing in to the house on Yale Terrace for Passover and other holidays every year. Later on in life, Eudie had some tough challenges in dealing with cancer, which she beat, Shea’s health and having to bury two of her three boys. While dealing with Shea’s decline, she still found a way to help those after him, becoming an early leader in the fight against Alzheimer’s Disease and ending her career at Bayonne Hospital’s gerontology out-patient facility. Eudie lived a long, adventurous, and fruitful life. She blazed a trail for the next several generations and never believed in things like glass ceilings.
Eudie is survived by her son Marc and daughter-in-law Louise, her grandchildren Craig (Julie), Philip (Erica), Meredith (Chris), and Matthew. She also had the great pleasure of having and knowing 7 great-grandchildren: Olivia, Eva, Noah, Reese, Caroline, Micah, and Harry, who were blessed to call her GG. She also leaves behind many cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and acquaintances.
May her memory be a blessing to all who knew her.
