Evelyn Sperling

Evelyn Sperling passed away on July 16, 2026, at age 100. She leaves a loving, devoted family and many loving and devoted friends and caretakers. She was predeceased by her parents Jacob and Regina/Rose Sperling, sister Freda York, brother Sanford Sperling, and niece Lisa Lansing. She is survived by her niece Regina Lansing Ruben (Jeff), great nephew Adam Ruben (Marina), great niece Rachel Ruben Taschenberger (Peter), and five great great niece and nephews. She wrote the following obituary several years ago:

Evelyn Sperling was born in Newark, NJ and resided in Portland, OR and Irvington and South Orange, NJ before moving to West Orange. She graduated from Weequahic High School. In her early years she worked at Newark Beth Israel Hospital's record room, volunteered at the Home for the Chronic Sick, and also did volunteer work on Sundays at Newark Beth Israel Hospital. After graduating from high school, she worked for the Office of Defense Transportation (during World War II) being promoted to several levels and, by the termination of that war, was the Office's Traffic Manager controlling the flow of trucks and trailers trips across our country. The ODT was responsible for the distribution of the gasoline coupons required of vehicular drivers. She later worked for Newark's well-known realtor, Jewish education devotee, and Jewish philanthropist Michael A. Stavitsky (where she got a well-rounded schooling). After a year of residing and working in Portland, OR, she returned to NJ. From then on, she began a new career in the travel business working for Prokacimer Travel and then as office manager, secretary, bookkeeper, and travel agent for the newly formed Some's Travel in Irvington, NJ. For eight years before she retired, she worked at Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel, in South Orange, NJ - a job she loved. She sang in Carnegie Hall with the Hazomer Choral Society of the Newark Y and sang in the choir at Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel. She was an active member of the B+P Women's Newark Chapter of American Jewish Congress. She thrived on her classical music CDs, was thrilled by and loved nature, her books which she devoured, and enjoyed sculpting and painting. She was fascinated with colors (which in 2012 played such a large part in that year's fashions and decorating). Evelyn cherished her family and loved her many good and devoted friends.

A Graveside Service will be held at B'nai Abraham Memorial Park, 2600 US-22, Union, NJ 07083, US, on July 27, 2026, at 2:00 pm.
