
Gerald (Gerry) Norman Tuch, age 86, of North Caldwell NJ, passed away after a brief illness on Thursday, August 10, 2023. He leaves behind his wife of 61 years, Marlene, his son Neil, Neil’s wife Adrienne and their three children, Bayley, Lexi and Skylar, and his son Steven, Steven’s wife Robin and their three children, Sam, Aidan and Emery. Gerry loved his family with all his heart and found tremendous joy in sharing the lives of his children and grandchildren. He also leaves behind his brother Eugene (Gene) and Gene’s wife Judith and his brother Charles and his wife Janice.
Gerry was born in Jersey City, NJ to Belle and Sam Tuch, both of blessed memory. He spent his youth in Jersey City, where he graduated from Lincoln High School. He was very involved in High School activities, such as the band and the school newspaper, but he was most proud of his out-of-school achievement--becoming an Eagle Scout.
Gerry graduated with a BS degree in Accounting from Rutgers University in 1959. It is at Rutgers that he met his wife, Marlene. Gerry was a member and corresponding scribe of Tau Delta Phi fraternity.
After graduating college, Gerry enrolled in a special program of the US Army National Guard. He initially served for six months in the Army and then was a member of the reserves for a number of years, going away to an army base for two weeks in the summer.
After marrying, Gerry and Marlene lived for a few years in Jersey City, before moving to Bloomfield and, subsequently, settling in North Caldwell for the last 47 years.
Gerry built a long and successful career in accounting, which he continued to practice until his recent hospitalization. Gerry was a partner in two accounting firms, J.H. Cohen & Company (now CohnReznick) and Richard A. Eisner & Company (now EisnerAmper) Following retirement from Eisner, after over 35 years in public accounting, he continued to work as a CPA, consulting on accounting and auditing issues and reviewing reports prior to their release.
Throughout his career, Gerry participated in professional efforts to improve the technical competency of practicing accountants. For many years Gerry served on the New Jersey Society of CPA’s Auditing and Accounting Standards Committee. Gerry was the first chairperson of the Society’s Quality/Peer Review Executive Committee. Gerry chaired and was a member of the Society’s Quality Control Committee. He also served as a Vice President of the New Jersey Society of CPA’s.
Gerry testified in Federal and State courts in New York and New Jersey as an accounting expert. He defended accountants and management in a wide range of cases and served as a consultant on a variety of technical issues related to these and other cases.
Gerry was a lecturer to the New Jersey Society of CPA’s and the American Institute of CPA’s and a guest lecturer at Rutgers and Seton Hall Universities.
Gerry was Chair of the Audit Committee of the Jewish Federation of Greater MetoWest for 30 years, and a long-standing member of the Board of Directors of both The Bridge and the Essex Valley School. Gerry was a member of Temple Sholom of West Essex, sharing freely of his accounting expertise and serving for many years on its Ritual Committee.
The family requests donations in his memory be made to either Temple Sholom of West Essex, Cedar Grove, NJ or to The Bridge, West Caldwell, NJ.
A funeral service for Gerry will be held Sunday, August 13, 2023 at 1:00 PM at Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, 68 Old Short Hills Road, Livingston, NJ 07039. Following the funeral service will be a burial at 2:30 PM at Beth Israel Cemetery, 1098 Woodbridge Center Drive, Woodbridge, NJ 07095.
