OBITUARY

Harriet Kaplan

March 23, 1962August 3, 2018

Harriet Kaplan, devoted wife and mother, lost her hard-fought battle to cancer on Aug. 3, 2018, She was 56. Harriet was born in Philadelphia, where she continued her educational path to graduate from Villanova Law School in 1987. It was there she met her future husband, Dr. Barry Kaplan, who was attending Dental School at the University of Pennsylvania. They subsequently moved to New Jersey and ultimately resided in Randolph for the better part of 25 years with their beloved children, Max, age 25, and Ilana, age 19. Harriet completely immersed herself in the lives of her husband and children. Harriet took the role of office manager for her husband's dental practice, using her legal skills to advocate tirelessly for patients and insurance issues. She absorbed herself completely in his work, and attended many scientific sessions together in order to be fully aware of all aspects of the dental procedures and office policies. No one could have been more focused or dedicated. Her close friends were awed by her kindness, tenacity, loyalty, and self-effacing advocacy for anyone needing advice. Harriet left us all too soon, and will be deeply missed by all. Harriet is survived by her husband Barry; two children, Max and Ilana; her father-in-law, Edward Kaplan, and her loving brother, Howard Elgart. Services will be held at 11:45 a.m. today (Sunday, Aug. 5), at Bernheim-Apter- Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel in Livingston, N.J., with interment to follow at King Solomon Cemetery In Clifton, N.J. Contributions in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Barry,
Our families go back a long time, but it was only relatively recently that I got to know Harriet from our conversations in the office. Suffice it to say that she was one smart, capable, and devoted woman. I know I speak for the rest of my family when I say that we are so very sorry for your loss and hope that, sooner rather than later, you will be able to be comforted by remembrances of her life and the life you shared so closely together.

Barry my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. It was always a pleasure to talk to Harriet. There was never a time I spoke to her that she wasn't warm, bubbly and helpful. She will be missed.

The Smoger and Kaplan families share a link very much like family. We share in simchas with happiness and in mourning we share the great sadness. May Harriet's memory be a blessing. Our hearts go out to you during this difficult time.
