
Dr. Herbert F. Hein, 74, of Short Hills, N.J., passed away peacefully on July 26, 2013, surrounded by his family. Services will be held at Bernheim Apter Kreitzman Funeral Chapel in Livingston, N.J., on Sunday, July 28, at 1 pm. Dr. Hein was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1938. His family moved to Long Island, where he attended Lawrence High School and then South Side High School. He went on to receive a bachelor of arts degree in history from the University of Vermont, followed by his M.D. from the University of Vermont's College of Medicine. Dr. Hein completed his internship at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and his residency in ophthalmology at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. In 1965, he entered the United States Navy and then served a year in Vietnam with the Marine Corps in 1966. He returned safely the following year and moved his family to Elizabeth, N.J., and built a thriving ophthalmology practice in Newark. He served as the president of the medical staff at Saint James Hospital in Newark for two years. He received various awards and accolades for his passionate practice of medicine throughout the state of New Jersey. Dr. Hein is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Susan Flax Hein; his daughter, Stacey and her husband, Dr. David Gross, of Elizabeth; his son, Steven and his wife, Kimberly, of Short Hills, N.J.; his brother, Peter and his wife, Mimi, of Dix Hills, N.Y., and his beloved grandchildren, Elisabeth, Jeremy, and Casey. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation in his memory.
