Dr. Herbert A. Lieberman

August 6, 1920- August 23, 2016

The Lieberman family is saddened to announce the passing of beloved husband, father and grandfather, Herbert A. Lieberman, Ph.D. at the age of 96. Dr. Lieberman died on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, as result of cardiac arrest.

Dr. Lieberman was President of his own business, H.H. Lieberman Associates, after retiring in 1985 as Director and Vice President of Proprietary /Toiletry Product Development at Warner-Lambert Company, following 24 years of service. After earning his Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from Purdue University and two MS degrees in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Chemistry from Columbia University, he wrote numerous publications and developed patents related to pharmaceutical dosage forms and process development.

He served as editor and co-editor of a number of seminal industrial pharmacy textbooks and a two-volume work on parenteral medications. He was also on the editorial advisory boards for several scientific pharmaceutical journals including the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, the Journal of Pharmaceutical Technology, and the Drug Development and Industrial Pharmacy Journal.

Recipient of several honorary awards in appreciation for his work in pharmaceutical research and education in pharmacy schools, Dr. Lieberman received the Alumni Medalist Award, two Presidential Citations, and the Lion Award – all from Columbia University, where he was a member of the Board of Trustees of Columbia University College of Pharmacy for nine years and Vice-Chairman of the Board for one year. In addition, he received a Distinguished Alumnus Award from Purdue University College of Pharmacy.

Dr. Lieberman was born in 1920, son of Hannah and Simon Lieberman of Brooklyn, New York. He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Helen Oken Lieberman, their devoted sons Bruce and Rob, daughters-in-law Patti and Marilyn, along with grandsons Peter, Danny, and Matthew who have been inspired by Herb’s drive for success and strong commitment to family. He is greatly missed.

Graveside funeral services for Herbert A. Lieberman will be held at King Solomon Memorial Park, 550 Dwasline Road, Clifton, NJ, at 2:00 pm, on Friday August 26, 2016. Attendees should drive to the back of the cemetery to the office building and will be guided to the burial site.
