

Herbert Rich, age 95, loving husband, father and grandfather, accomplished homebuilder and lifelong resident of Essex County, NJ, died peacefully in his beloved home on June 30, 2023. Predeceased by his parents, Rose and Nathan and sister, Sylvia, he is survived by his wife of nearly 65 years, Susan nee Epstein, his daughters Jennifer (Lou) Jurcik and Patty (Terry) Rich LaBan, and grandchildren Dylan (Alex), Tess, Eli, and Dahlia.
Born in Newark in 1927, Herb graduated from Irvington High School in 1945 and served in the U.S. Army in Japan from 1946-1948. Under the GI Bill, he attended Rutgers University and graduated from the School of Business Administration with a major in Accounting. He worked as a CPA and became a land developer, homebuilder, and then owner of Epstein and Rich Corporation. Along with his father-in-law, he developed properties in Cedar Grove, North Caldwell, and Morris Township. He enjoyed wearing many hats in the business, from land acquisition and permits to drawing up plans, financing, drafting, and more. Herbert was a member of North Jersey Homebuilders Association, as well as a long-term congregant at Temple Sholom of West Essex, where he served on the Board of Trustees.
Herb will be warmly remembered for his creativity, competence, commitment to family, clarity of vision and values, and profound sense of humor, which he retained to the end. Donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
A memorial service for Herbert will be held Monday, July 3, 2023 at 2:30 PM at Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, 68 Old Short Hills Road, Livingston, New Jersey 07039.
