Jack Devon Nathan

August 26, 2000July 3, 2020

Jack Devon Nathan of Livingston passed away suddenly on July 3, 2020. Jack was 19 years old. He is survived by his mother Bradi Harrison of Livingston, his father David Nathan of Livingston and sister Drew Nathan. He is also survived by his step-mother Ali Nathan, step-brother Connor Kogen, grandparents Harvey and Nancy Harrison of Loveladies, NJ and Lynne and Les Nathan of Westbrook, CT.

Jack was a rising junior at the University of Denver and a 2018 graduate of Livingston High School. He was an avid snowboarder and loving friend. Jack was also the founder of HappyJack (www.happyjacksworld.com) an apparel brand that featured his distinct art and is dedicated to raising awareness to mental health issues. Under Jack's guidance, HappyJack donated thousands of dollars to the Child Mind Institute.

Jack's warmth and empathy was embraced by everyone who knew him. He entered a room with a big smile and left leaving people feeling good about themselves. He encouraged us all to do precisely what is important to each of us or else we will end up being “normal” and Jack knew that normal is boring. Jack wanted people to own who they are, be free of judgement and live every minute of every day to the fullest. He will be deeply missed.

Services were private. A forthcoming charity will be announced in Jack’s honor.

Jack was an inspiration to everyone that surrounded him. He constantly filled people with joy and laughter, something that I have come to realize is very rare. Every time I talked to Jack, I was reminded of the positive outlook that I should have of life; to take chances, have fun and reach for the stars. Jack had a lot of confidence in himself and a strong will to succeed, but that never stopped him from helping the people around him. He truly cared about people close to him and wanted to see them thrive just as much as himself. Most of all Jack was a friend, something I will forever cherish. I hope he knows how much we all miss him.

As an Instructional Aide at LHS I was in Jack’s Chemistry class - where his beautiful smile and Big personality always lit up the room! I was so happy to see him as he grew and matured into a senior, and to have a quick catch-up chat with him in the hallways. I also had the pleasure of being in freshman and sophomore classes with Drew, whose tremendous personality was equally as infectious as her brother’s. My heart breaks for her, as well as the rest of your family. What an overwhelming loss - Please accept my condolences.

When I was with jack I felt as if I were inside a coming of age film where anything and everything was possible. He instilled a comforting sense of bliss in those who surrounded him. I looked up to Jack and those who admired him understand that without explanation. Jack defied social norms and created a world for himself where he could do what he loved and be successful, that is something most people don’t ever realize is possible. Jack always used to say to us, “What’s mine is yours.” and he meant that. Not to please people or climb a social ladder, but he genuinely believed that a world where generosity was normalized would be a better place for all. His understanding that possessions were meaningless unless there were people to share them with is something that is simple to understand, yet so hard to practice. At the end of the day, Jack was a friend. The best one that anyone could ask for. I wish I could just laugh with you one more time. I love you my angel, I love you Jack. I love you so much.

Jack Nathan was a soul that will live on forever. He changed my life in more life than one and feeling his love in a romantic way was something that cannot be replaced. He was strong minded and determined and no matter what he did, he did it with his full heart. I remember the first time I met him and I thought he was the most beautiful man I had ever seen. Being able to walk through life with him, even for a short time, showed me heights that I never knew I could reach. His love changed lives and his memory will live on forever. I am so thankful to have had a man like him in my life. He inspired me to live life to the fullest and never care what other people thought or think about “limits”. Anything is possible when you are with Jack and I will never forget that. Rest In Peace; we all love you so much.
