Joan was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1954 to Arthur and Mildred (Billie) Silverman. She grew up in Short Hills and went to school in Milburn before attending Skidmore College. A lifelong dog lover, she co-founded Creature Comfort Pet Therapy in 2011 to provide pet therapy services to the Northern and Central New Jersey community.
She was a loving and caring wife to Sandy, mother to Ashley and Alana, Nana to Elias and Mabel, and sister to Laurie and Kenneth.
