Joan was a professional artist for most of her adult life. She trained at the Moore Institute of Art in Philadelphia, The Art Students League of New York, and the New School for Social Research. Early in her career, she worked as a shoe designer in New York City.
From 1978-1987, Joan was on the faculty of the New Jersey Center for Visual Arts in Summit. During the early 1990's, she was an Artist in Residence at the Newark Museum and was also on the Museum's Arts Workshop faculty. She was a member of The Phoenix Gallery in Soho, one of the co-operative "10th Street Scene Galleries" that showcased vanguard contemporary art in downtown Manhattan, and had solo exhibitions there in the 1980's and 1990's. Her work—which included the large abstract canvases for which she was best known as well as prints, works on paper, collages, and sculpture—was featured in solo and juried group exhibitions throughout the Northeast United States as well as in Alabama and Washington state, and is included in public collections in New York, New Jersey, Alabama, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina.
Joan is survived by her loving husband, David L. Goldsmith; her children Amy Charmatz, Peter Goldsmith, and Jane Davis; and her granddaughters Lauren and Julia Davis.
