July 10, 1940 – December 28, 2018
John J. Szumaski died peacefully on the morning of December 28th, 2018. He was 78 years old and a long-time resident of Livingston, NJ and Lavallette NJ. He was born on 7/10/1940 in Orange, NJ and was raised in West Orange, NJ. A skilled pianist and musician as a youth he went on to graduate from Montclair State University. He married Gloria Luciano and together they had 4 children.
John was a General Contractor, with his longtime partner Mike Giordano, and an entrepreneur. He owned and operated several small businesses during his life including J&J Variety Store & Ida’s Kitchen in Normandy Beach, NJ.
John was perhaps most known and recognized for the J & J Variety store which has been in the Szumaski family since 1954. He loved all of his work, he was a true craftsman and perfectionist, he especially loved bringing smiles to the thousands of vacationers who visited his store every year.
His biggest joy in life was spending time with his family. He met his beautiful wife, Gloria, at the Jersey Shore and together, they raised four children, Gina Iammatteo, Denise (Joe D'Aries), Maria (Brian Siegel) and Joseph (Penny Szumaski)
More than anything, he adored his eight grandchildren, Matthew, Alexa, Joseph, Nicole, Ava, Ella, Emily and Tyler. He always challenged them to be their best and loved them with all of his heart.
He was predeceased by his parents Faye (nee Freda) and Joseph Szumaski, and a sister Annette Szumaski.
John always kept himself busy and in his free time he enjoyed watching the Yankees, Cooking, making wine and doing custom projects at his children's homes.
He was very close to his large extended family of brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, cousins and his nieces and nephews.
