

Leonard Joel Corwin [91], died unexpectedly on January 16, 2018, at St. Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston, NJ. He was born on October 13, 1926, in Elizabeth, NJ to George J. and Sara Corwin. In 1955, he married Phoebe Tenzer; together they raised their sons, Andrew and Scott.
Leonard was a graduate of Weequahic High School, Rutgers University (Phi Beta Kappa; a letterman in cross country, swimming, and track), and George Washington University Medical School. Following residency, interrupted by military service in the U.S. Navy finishing as a lieutenant commander, he was in private practice as an Obstetrician and Gynecologist in Millburn, NJ, for nearly 50 years. He was a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and served as President of the Essex County Medical Society and as Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Overlook Hospital, Summit, NJ. A most avid golfer, he was a member of Maplewood Country Club, and played duplicate bridge as a life master at the Essex Bridge Center. A voracious reader, he was a frequent patron of the Livingston Public Library.
Leonard is survived by his wife of 62 years Dr. Phoebe T. Corwin, his brother Dr. Howard A. Corwin, sons Dr. Andrew D. Corwin (Dr. Mary-Joan Marron-Corwin) and Scott O. Corwin (Margaret Talman), grandchildren Matthew, Timothy, Katherine, George, and Augustus (“Gus”), and seven nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Dr. Norman A. Corwin.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 pm, Sunday, January 21, 2018 at Temple B’nai Jeshurun, 1025 South Orange Avenue, Short Hills, NJ. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Leonard’s name to the Livingston (NJ) Public library, or to the charity of your choice.
