Marilyn L. Zirl passed away this Sunday April 22, 2018 after courageous battles with cancer. She is survived by her daughter Barbara and son David and his wife Lisa; and her three grandchildren Ben, Will and Olivia.
Marilyn was born in Newark, NJ on March 16, 1933, grew up in West Orange, and lived in Livingston for 55 years. She attended Cornell University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Barnard College and a Master of Arts from Teachers College, Columbia University. She was initially a French and English teacher at West Orange High School and later taught French and home-bound students in Livingston. She then enjoyed a successful career as a synagogue Administrator at Oheb Shalom Congregation in South Orange, and at the Jewish Community Center of Fort Lee. She retired this past June after spending nearly 16 very satisfying years as the Administrator of the Sister Rose Thering Fund at Seton Hall University, where she helped raise awareness and funds for educating teachers and high school students about the Holocaust. Marilyn had been active in the Livingston League of Women voters, the Livingston PTA and was the first woman President of Oheb Shalom Congregation, in South Orange. She volunteered to teach English as a second language to Chinese students, and even helped them order Italian food.
Marilyn was an avid reader, life-long learner and could always solve the New York Times crossword puzzles. She enjoyed baking fabulous desserts and passed along her family baking legacy to her daughter and granddaughter. From the time was a girl she always had a passion for cats.
She was predeceased by her husband Freddy.
A funeral will be held on Wednesday April 25th, 2018 at 11:45am at Bernheim Apter Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, 68 Old Short Hills Road, Livingston, NJ. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to either the Sister Rose Thering Fund for Education in Jewish-Christian Studies, or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
