In loving memory of Matthew Jonathan Brown, 65, who passed away on October 20th, 2026, after a sudden illness. Matt was born on November 3rd, 1960, in East Stroudsburg, PA, to Lester Theodore Brown and Judith Helen Brown.
A brilliant mind and a warm heart, Matt attended Stroudsburg High School and earned his BA from Sarah Lawrence College. Prior to retirement, his professional journey took him through a career in Sales Management.
Matt shared his love with his life partner of 17 years, Lisa Lewin, in their cherished home in West Caldwell, New Jersey. Together, they shared a companionship, warmth, and the quiet joys of a life.
Prior to his life with Lisa, Matt shared his life with his former wife, Jill Brown. Together, they embarked on the journey of adopting two daughters from Bolivia, Sarah Florence Brown and Anna Ruth Brown in 1998 and 2000. Matt and Jill created a family rooted in unconditional love.
A devoted father, Matt faced profound sorrow with the loss of his daughter Anna Ruth Brown in 2019 at the age of 19. His surviving daughter, Sarah Florence Brown, 28, continues to embody the strength and love that Matt instilled in her.
Matt is also mourned by his sister, Stephanie Kolber, and her husband Scott Kolber and his nephews Alex and Bennett. Along with Lisa’s sister, Donna Herskovitz, her husband Ken Herskovitz, and his nephew and niece Alex and Febee.
Matt loved his home in West Caldwell. He created a space that mirrored that of his home he once resided in, in a small cottage surrounded by the serene beauty of mountains and greenery in the English countryside. He tended to his home not as a chore, but as a pleasure to create a space for himself and Lisa to grow.
He was an avid lover of adventure and expedition. His favorite day consisted of getting in the car for a long drive, going somewhere in nature, or visiting a historical land site—even better when he got to experience his travels with friends and loved ones. In another lifetime he said he would have sought out a career as a photojournalist or an archeologist—professions that so beautifully reflected his desire to explore, understand, and preserve the wonders of the world.
A service to honor and celebrate Matt's life will be held on October 22nd, 2026, at 3:00 PM at the Bernheim Apter Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, located at 68 Old Short Hills Road, Livingston, NJ 07039. Shiva will immediately follow services at Jill Brown’s home.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Planned Parenthood and the National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA)—organizations that were close to Matt's heart and reflect his enduring commitment to compassion and advocacy.
Matt's legacy lives on in the hearts of those he touched, a testament to a life well-lived and a love that will forever be cherished. Though his passing leaves an immeasurable absence in the lives of those who loved him, Matt's memory will endure in the stories shared, the places explored, the lessons remembered, and the love he gave so freely.
