Miriam Greenberg passed away on March 5, 2014 at the age of 90. She leaves behind a bevy of friends and family, years of teaching and tutoring children with learning disabilities, and good works and memories too numerous to name.
Born in Newark, NJ in 1923, she graduated from Weequahic High School in 1941 for a WWII interrupted college education at NYU. There she met her husband of 37 years, Norman. This marriage produced her three beloved children, Barbara, Amy, and Jay, though the marriage ended in divorce.
Miriam earned her BA in Education from Newark State Teachers College (now Kean University) in 1963 and went on to a Masters in Special Education at Montclair State University. She taught for 25 years in Montclair, NJ where she earned accolades from her superiors, students and their parents alike. She was a co-founder of Harbor Hills Day Camp. She was early on a working mother and dedicated her life to balancing the demands of both.
In retirement, she was an avid reader, Broadway, movie, and culture goer, canasta player, and great friend to many. She was active in Hadassah and the Brandeis Organization. She loved food, shopping, walking, a good party, and took wonderful care of her grandchildren whom she dearly loved. She remained fiercely independent to the end.
She leaves behind her three children and their spouses and partners, Barbara and Michael Schneider, Amy Greenberg and Al Levy, and Jay Greenberg and Janet Horowitz. She was pre-deceased by one grandson, Morgan Schneider, but her remaining grandchildren include Julia Schneider Feingold, and her husband, Lee, David Schneider, Daniel Greenberg, Spencer Greenberg, and Dylan Levy. She leaves, as well, her niece, Gail Froiran and family, and two nephews, Brian and David Gluck. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
