Rebecca S. Levine

February 23, 1932November 1, 2019

Rebecca Levine of White Meadow Lake, Rockaway, NJ died on November 1st, 2019 in Amherst, MA after a long illness. She was 87. She had moved to Amherst, MA one year ago.

She is survived by her daughter Karen Levine, son-in-law Tom Gardner and grandson Koby Gardner-Levine of Amherst, MA; daughter Cindy Levine of Rockaway, NJ; son Jeffrey Levine, daughter-in-law Martha Eisenberg and grandchildren Zachary and Rose Levine of Philadelphia, PA; and step grand-daughter Sarah Creedon, her husband Reid and son Ezekial of Washington, DC. She is also survived by a large extended family and many dear friends. She is predeceased by her husband Larry Levine, parents Rose and Harry Shiffman, sister Sylvia Muchnick, and her brother Jack Shiffman.

Rebecca grew up in a large, close-knit Jewish immigrant family in Brooklyn, NY.

These roots informed many of her life’s passions: a love of Yiddish and Jewish culture and close family ties and community engagement, which took many forms over her life.

Despite recent health challenges, she would continue to folkdance, teach Yiddish, enjoy theater in NYC with friends, and stay closely connected to her immediate and extended family.

Rebecca was a Life member of Hadassah, where she served in leadership roles. She chaired the Russian Resettlement committee of the Morris-Sussex United Jewish Federation, and served on the board of directors of Jewish Family Service. She was the principal of the Suburban Jewish School. Rebecca was a devoted Yiddish teacher and folk dancer where she made lasting friendships. She also made life-long friends while living briefly in Morristown NJ and then in White Meadow Lake where she lived for 59 years. She made new friends in the last year at the Applewood Retirement Community in Amherst, MA.

She brought people together and always looked for opportunities to celebrate life. She was a natural leader and teacher, a devoted friend and family member with an earnest warmth and beautiful smile, who tried always to look on the sunny side of life.

May she live on with her full vibrancy in the hearts of all whom she has touched.
