Rhoda began a career in the newspaper field in the 1960s working for her late father, legendary New Jersey sportswriter Sid Dorfman, at Dorf Feature Service. The bureau provides local sports and news content to The Star-Ledger and its sister newspapers in New Jersey and to NJ.com.
During the 1960s, Rhoda was instrumental in helping her father build an obituary page for The Star-Ledger. She would manage the obituary department for many years afterwards. She also edited community news for the newspaper before retiring in 2008.
A caring mother who was devoted to family, Rhoda was born in Newark, N.J., and lived in Morristown, N.J., before moving to Cranford 40 years ago.
She graduated from Jonathan Dayton High School, Springfield, N.J., and went on to study at American University in Washington, D.C., before joining her father in the news business.
Rhoda found joy in traveling, especially seeing the sights of Los Angeles with Terri Gittlin, her girlhood friend and traveling companion, and in multiple visits to Las Vegas and other West Coast destinations.
She also had many light-hearted moments over the years at rock concerts, never missing the Rolling Stones or, her favorite musician, Rod Stewart.
She looked forward to meeting her son, Scott, and his friends in Manhattan for dinner before attending one of her many Broadway shows with any number of her friends.
She spent many happy leisure hours at the Maplewood Country Club, where she and her family maintained a membership for more than 30 years. She was a regular at Ferraro's in Westfield, N.J., dining often with her late father, and a frequent guest at La Griglia in Kenilworth with her son and daughter-in-law as well as her friends.
Rhoda was predeceased by her beloved son, Jason; her father, Sid, and her mother, Bernice.
Surviving are her son, Scott, and his wife, Elana Dorfman, who were always by her side; her brother, Gary, and sister-in-law Marianne Dorfman; nieces, Lael Dorfman and Jessica Dorfman, and her close and devoted friend of 65 years, Terri Gittlin.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, www.cancer.org.
