Sarah “Cappy” Weinberg. Cappy got her nickname in school because there were so many Sarah's in her class. Her maiden name (Kaplan) was shortened and Cappy she became forever more. As a young girl Cappy was a “woman’s libber” way ahead of her time. She was active in gymnastics, played tennis and rode horses. After graduating from West Orange High School she went to secretarial school and then went to work at a local law firm as a legal secretary.
She met her future husband at a local eatery near the haberdashery he owned. She married Jacob (Jack) Weinberg in March, 1942 and gave birth to her only child, a son Mark, two years later and retired to be a "stay-at-home" mom. Her family moved to Glen Ridge where she lived for 52 years before moving to Brighton Gardens after it first opened.
Hobbies included, going to the movies; attending theater productions, mainly in New York, the Paper Mill Playhouse, and Drew University (Shakespeare Festival); reading; and going to concerts. Cappy was an avid Bridge and Mahjong player. She also played canasta.
Back in the day she was a great joke teller, with impeccable timing; always had a positive, can do attitude; loved to hit the slots at the casinos; and is often referred to as the "Mayor of Brighton Gardens" where she chaired the Resident's Council for the last 10 years.
