Born and raised in Newark, NJ, Seymour raised his family in Springfield before moving to Florham Park. He attended Weequahic High School in Newark before briefly moving to California, ultimately enlisting in the Army and assigned to the 257th Army Air Force and the elite Army Air Force Band during WWII. After the War, he went on to receive his undergraduate degree in music performance from New York University and subsequently earned a Masters degree in education. Later in life, Seymour completed all the course work towards his Ph.D. from NYU as well. His accomplishments were many. He was one of the most beloved music educators for the Union NJ school system and it was a special source of satisfaction to him that so many of his students stayed in touch with him throughout his life. He also brought so much happiness to so many families as a leader of some of the best society orchestras, including Bill Harrington, Bob Hardwick and Lester Lanin. His other passionate interests, including photography, tennis and boating, served as platforms to enrich his life in so many ways.
Seymour was the beloved husband of the late Rhoda Goldberg Simon for 19 years, loving father of Penny Simon, Jill Simon (Ronald Reisman), and David Simon (Sheryl), and devoted grandfather of Ross Reisman, Andrew Reisman, and Brenna Simon. When the family gathered to say goodbye to their beloved father and grandfather, they told him what a wonderful family he had made. His generous response: “I didn’t make the family. The family made me.”
Rest in peace our dear papa. We miss you and love you everyday.
