Sylvia Fried of Delray Beach, Florida, formerly of Verona, NJ passed away on July 23rd at the age of 91. Born Sylvia Bass in Newark on July 7, 1922 she then married Milton “Mickey” Fried on July 4th, 1948. They lived in West Orange and then Short Hills where they raised their three children Steven, Paula and Robert. Sylvia was very devoted to many organizations. She served as President of the Sisterhood of Congregation Oheb Shalom in South Orange, and as the President of the National Woman’s League of the Children's Asthma Research Institute and Hospital (CARIH) in Denver. She also served as a Trustee on many boards including United Jewish Federation, Daughter’s of Israel, and Community Foundations of both MetroWest and South Palm Beach. Sylvia received awards from many organizations including The Golda Meir Woman of Valor Award for The State of Israel Bonds, The Woman of Achievement Award from the Woman’s League for Conservative Judaism and The Torch of Liberty Award from the Friends of the Anti-Defamation League. She was a frequent visitor to Israel and founded the Sylvia and Mickey Fried Nursery School in Mitzpe Aviv in the Northern Galilee. Her philanthropy also included founding the Mickey Fried Nursery School in Oheb Shalom and the Mickey Fried Day Center for the Elderly in Cherkassy, Ukraine. She was predeceased by her husbands Mickey Fried and Theodore Arnold and by her brothers Richard Bass and Morris Bass. She is survived by her sister Melanie Jaynes of Santa Monica, California and her children Steven Fried (Donna) of West Orange, Paula Saginaw (David) of North Caldwell and Robert Fried of West Chester, Pa. Sylvia was blessed to have grandchildren Jonathan, Lauren (Akiva Balfour), Zachary, Jordon (Tory), Ilana, Matthew, Andrew, Mickey and Sara and two great-grandchildren Raya and Ethan Balfour. Services will be held Thursday, July 25th at Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel in Livingston at noon. If desired, memorial donations can be made to The Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest, The American Cancer Society or The American Heart Association.
