Sylvia Nachtigall (nee Fliegel) passed away peacefully at home Wednesday May 3 due to complications from ALS. Born in Brooklyn, she was a graduate of Erasmus Hall HS and received a Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education from Brooklyn College. She and her husband, Walter, who predeceased her, raised their three children, Lisa Nachtigall, Amy Nimensky, and Jeremy Nachtigall in West Orange, NJ. An active volunteer for many service organizations in her community, Sylvia was the first woman to serve as President of Temple Beth Shalom in Livingston, NJ, where she also served as President of the Sisterhood. Sylvia leaves a rich legacy to her children and to son-in-law Bruce Nimensky, daughter-in-law Lauren Nachtigall and beloved grandchildren Erica and Lauren Nimensky, and Jacob and Jordyn Nachtigall.
