One side of his family called him "Al", the other side "Fred" and to many other friends who knew him as "Poppa". He loved to share his life experiences and memories of his time in the European Theater of WW II. There he drove a jeep and a truck transporting officers and troops for the 167th Engineer Combat Battalion. Al was awarded the EAME Theater ribbon with three bronze stars for meritorious service in a combat zone.
Al enjoyed the quiet solitude of fishing on Forest Lake and staying with his son and family at their cottage in Alger, MI. He lived with his son and daughter-in-law for 20+ years developing more than just a grandparent relationship, helping to raise his granddaughters, who had the loving nickname for him: "Scoompie". He was thrilled to see his granddaughters start their own families. He was a practical joker, known to always have a funny thought and phrase. Others said about Al that "He made their day" with his upbeat attitude and warm personality. Al was a take charge guy who would put into action the plans of others once they mentioned those plans in his presence. You did not want to argue with "Mr. Perfect" as he was always right, yet mostly pleasantly so. Al possessed a heart of gold that he would do anything for anyone, before even being asked. Family, above all, was his true love. Secondly, the family pets.
Mr. Pappalardo is survived by his daughter-in-law, Gloria Pappalardo, granddaughters, Erica (Jeremey) Millikin and Marisa (Michael Stephenson) Pappalardo; and four great-grandchildren.
