Barbara Anne Bakewell

Barbara Anne (nee Heggie) Bakewell, born November 30, 1942, in Detroit, Michigan, passed away peacefully on September 4, 2026, at Trinity Health in Livonia, Michigan, at age 83, from complications of a cancerous brain tumor.

Barb grew up in Detroit and attended Crary Elementary and Cooley High School. She received her Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degrees from Eastern Michigan University and taught for 38 years in the Clarenceville School District. She began in first and second grades, then became the Librarian and Art teacher. She was instrumental in converting the Library into a state-of-the-art media center.

She was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a Sorority for exceptional teachers. She was an avid collector, president of Bell Foundry Questers in Northville, and a member of the Doulton Collectors of Greater Detroit. Barb was a Deacon at First Presbyterian Church and very active in the Northville Historical Society as a board member and docent.

She used her creative talents in decorating the buildings in Mill Race Village for the Holidays. In 2020, Barb and her husband Art were given the Gold Key Award. At home, she decorated for every holiday from Valentine's Day, Easter, Independence Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. She was proud of her Scottish ancestry and hosted an annual Hogmanay party on New Year’s Day for friends and family for many years. Barb will be remembered for her kindness and generosity, and her willingness to help wherever her creative talents were needed.

Barb is survived by her husband of 57 years, Arthur, her daughter Bonnie, and her nephew Trevor Bakewell Jones.

A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, October 10, at 11:00 am at First Presbyterian Church, 200 E Main St, Northville, MI 48167.
