Barbara was born in Lafayette, Indiana, to Wilmer (Sr.) and Mabel (Moore) Good on February 22, 1938. She grew up on a farm and graduated from Rossville High School in 1955. At Ball State Teachers College (now University), she received a degree in Home Economics Education. She later earned a MEd from Wayne State University.
