She was married to her husband Derald for 70 wonderful years, a partnership of love and faith that is an inspiration to her children, extended family and friends.
Barbara grew up in Detroit, Michigan, and graduated from Southeastern High School in 1946 and the University of Michigan (BA, Bus. Admin.) in 1949. All who knew Barbara experienced her love of life, her husband and children, and her many friends. She was a devout Lutheran and active in her congregations. Music was always special to her, as a pianist in her earlier years and throughout her days as a singer in choral groups. She loved to sing just for fun and up until the end would often break into song whenever the spirit moved her. Family and friends will also remember her laugh – she found joy in so much around her that little time passed between expressions of merriment. In retirement with Derald, Barbara spent lovely summers Up North at their home on Little Traverse Bay, and wintered in sunny and warm Venice, Florida. In 2006, they moved to live full-time at Fox Run, a retirement community in Novi, Michigan to be closer to family (and to enjoy new friends and activities).
Barbara is survived by Derald and her four children – Lee (Margy Long), Jim, Sharon and Rick; grandchildren Shawn (Garrett), Eric, Nora, and Lena; and great-grandchildren Claire and Will. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
Memorial contributions can be sent to St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 7979 Commerce Road, West Bloomfield, MI 48324. Please indicate "Barbara Katterman memorial."
